Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) Treatment For Hair Loss: How Does It Work?

Did you know that the so-called “vampire facial” that certain celebrities swear by can also be used to restore your hair? According to people who have it done, this procedure helps their complexions and promotes healthy skin. The PRP treatment for hair loss also uses your own blood, although it works in a different way. Here are all of the details that you need to know, courtesy of Sure Hair International – PRP Treatment.

What Does PRP Stand For?

The initials in this treatment, PRP, stand for Platelet Rich Plasma. It’s made up of part of your own blood. Everyone has two main components of their blood. These are plasma (which are used in the treatment) and red blood cells. The plasma is also made up of two different things – platelets and white blood cells. When you give blood, it comes with all of this combined together, although they can be separated in a lab. If you go in for a PRP treatment, they are indeed separated, and only the platelet part of the plasma is used, hence the name of the treatment – Platelet Rich Plasma.

How Does It Work?

This treatment works in a very interesting way. The platelets contain what are known as growth factors. These are what tell your skin cells that they need to begin functioning again. When you place those platelets on the skin, they send that message to your cells and promote growth. With a PRP treatment for hair loss, you give blood (your own blood is used for the treatment), and it’s it separated in a machine called a centrifuge. The platelets (in the plasma) are separated out, and then a doctor injects them into your scalp. This is done directly at the level of your scalp where the hair follicles are located. The platelets stimulate the follicles, and then they begin producing hair.

Will It Work For Me?

If you are in the early stages of hair loss, then PRP Treatments are quite promising. There are a lot of studies going on right now to see the ultimate extent of these treatments – for example, if they’ll work for people who have lost most of their hair. Although PRP isn’t really considered experimental any longer, it doesn’t have the solid track record of other treatments, such as hair transplants. With that said, this option shouldn’t be discounted, as it could be the solution to your hair loss. There is only one way to find out if it will work for you, and that’s to schedule a consult with a physician who specializes in this type of hair loss treatment. Only then will you know for sure.
